University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student Calvin Lutzke is set to graduate this fall with a triple major in Latin American and Latinx studies, political science, and Spanish. His academic journey began with an interest in Spanish and political science, but it was a student recruiter who introduced him to Latin American and Latinx studies that truly captured his attention. "It was a way to understand and learn about culture and not just language," Lutzke explained.

Lutzke's studies were enriched by UW-Eau Claire's study abroad program. He spent a semester in Valladolid, Spain, where he took courses on geography, art, culture, literature, language, and grammar. Additionally, he participated in the university’s faculty-led immersion program in Guatemala, living with a local host family.

At UWEC, Lutzke has taken on roles beyond the classroom. As a recruiter for the Latin American and Latinx studies program, he engages with students interested in the field. “I give presentations to students who may not know what they want to do yet,” he said. His work extends into tutoring as well; after taking the course Human Rights and the Environment in Latin America with Dr. Analisa DeGrave, Lutzke became an Honors tutor for the class.

His passion for political science is evident through his role as outreach coordinator on the board of the College Democrats at UWEC. In this capacity, he connects with visiting groups on campus and organizes events.

Lutzke also presented at UWEC’s Celebration of Excellence in Research and Creative Activity last semester. His presentation focused on how rhetoric toward immigrants has shifted across different presidencies.

Reflecting on his time at University Honors Program, Lutzke noted that it provided unique educational experiences: “I think Honors has given me unique experiences in the classes I’ve taken.” The Honors 400 senior seminar was particularly impactful for him as it prepared him for life post-graduation.

Looking ahead, Lutzke hopes to work for a nonprofit organization in Madison or Milwaukee areas where he can continue applying his passion for social change.
