A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Cylon on November 7, 2024. The request, issued by us at Chippewa Valley Times, sought information regarding new voter registrations that took place on November 5, 2024.
As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to such public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
The FOIA request was made under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., and specifically asked for a list of new voters who registered on November 5, 2024. We have requested these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of analysis and reporting.
In our capacity as a member of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional. This waiver would enable us to access this vital information without financial constraints.
