The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team marked the beginning of a new chapter by defeating Nebraska Wesleyan University, ranked 14th, with a score of 68-64. This victory was significant as it took place at the newly opened Sonnentag Event Center and was also the first win for new head coach Zach Malvik.
This win against a ranked opponent was the team's first since January 26, 2022. The game saw UW-Eau Claire (1-0) receiving notable contributions from Michael Casper, who scored 25 points and made seven three-pointers. He also collected four rebounds. Andre Renta added 17 points and secured four steals in his debut for UW-Eau Claire. Carter Huschka contributed with 11 points and four rebounds, while Carter Lichtsinn had eight points and seven boards. Cade Hall set a personal record with 15 rebounds.
Despite a slow start where Nebraska Wesleyan led by eight midway through the first half, UW-Eau Claire managed to narrow the gap with an 8-3 run. A strong finish to the opening half allowed them to lead 34-27 after an impressive 14-1 run initiated by Renta's layup.
The Blugolds maintained their lead throughout the second half, even extending it to as much as twelve points with six minutes remaining. Although Nebraska Wesleyan reduced this margin to four in the final minute, they missed crucial shots on their last possession allowing UW-Eau Claire to secure their victory.
UW-Eau Claire shot at a rate of 38% from the field and achieved a three-point shooting percentage of 39%. Both teams recorded an equal number of rebounds at forty each.
