The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team participated in the Luther College Open in Decorah, Iowa, on Saturday. Wrestlers Zak McPhee and Calvin Singewald both achieved individual victories, showcasing the Blugolds' strong performance at the tournament, which did not have team scores.
Calvin Singewald secured the 133-pound title in the Silver Division with a perfect 5-0 record. His path to victory included two wins by fall and one by technical fall. He claimed the championship with a 2-0 decision over UW-La Crosse's Wyatt Magolski.
Zak McPhee continued his successful start to his college career by winning the 184-pound weight class in the Silver Division. This marks his second consecutive title following his win at the Yellowjacket Open. McPhee finished with a 4-0 record, securing bonus points in his last three matches, including pins in both the quarterfinals and semifinals, and a 16-0 technical fall over Hawkeye CC's Isaiah Kellow in the finals.
Overall, six UW-Eau Claire wrestlers placed in their respective categories within the Silver Division. Brady Brewick finished second at 165 pounds with a 3-1 record. Ty Fink took fourth place at 149 pounds after winning three out of five matches. Brody Perry placed sixth at 285 pounds, while Tristan Drier came eighth at 165 pounds.
The Blugolds had a total of 20 wrestlers competing at the event. Their next challenge will be against UW-Oshkosh for their dual season opener on Thursday, November 14th, as they host for the Chancellor's Cup at home.
