The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) Track & Field teams had a successful outing at the WIAC Championships held in Platteville, Wisconsin. The women's team secured second place with 169.75 points, while the men's team achieved third place with 120.5 points.
Coach Casey Chadwick guided two javelin throwers to conference victories. Freshman Laura Bertrang won the women's event with a mark of 39.82 meters, and Tommy Mestnik claimed the men's title with a throw of 56.69 meters.
Yakob Ekoue excelled in multiple events, winning the discus with a distance of 52.89 meters, securing second place in hammer throw at 59.27 meters, and taking third in shot put at 16.80 meters. Ekoue aims for high placements at the NCAA National Championships.
Kayla Behnke led the women's throws by winning the discus with a heave of 45.86 meters. The women's throwers contributed significantly to their team's overall score.
In heptathlon events, Emma Gruen, Jane Kautz, and Lauryn Rustad achieved national qualifying scores.
The Blugolds are set to compete next weekend at the Eagle Open in La Crosse as preparation for the upcoming National Championships.
