Marika Kisgen, a senior from Des Moines, Iowa, has been named UW-Eau Claire Athletics' Blugold of the Week. This recognition is presented by BSN Sports/Nike.

Kisgen is majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in French Language. She chose UW-Eau Claire for its positive team environment, emphasis on sustainability, and natural areas around campus. "I also loved the campus emphasis on sustainability as well as all the natural areas around campus," she said.

In addition to her athletic commitments, Kisgen is involved in the student dining committee and holds a position in housing and residence life. Balancing her roles requires effective time management skills. "One big part of that is making sure to schedule time where I'm just a person," she noted.

Reflecting on her athletic career, Kisgen expressed pride in being part of the 10K group in track and field during spring 2024. "We had all 10, 10K runners finish under 39 minutes which was an amazing personal record for myself," she shared.

When it comes to pre/post-competition snacks, Kisgen prefers Lara bars or anything with chocolate. She also revealed a unique talent: setting up and tearing down a tent solo in under three minutes.

Kisgen's dream job is to be a barista due to her passion for coffee and conversations. If given the chance to travel anywhere, she would choose Finland. Her choice of professional athlete to spend a day with is Emily Sisson because of her relatable training philosophy.

Her advice for current and incoming Blugold student-athletes is to use available resources and get involved on campus. "The more you can get involved on campus, the more you will succeed in your goals for college," she advised.

Head Women's Cross Country Coach Dan Schwamberger praised Kisgen's caring nature towards her teammates. "Marika truly cares about the well-being of her teammates," he said.

Teammate Kassie Bargender highlighted Kisgen's positive attitude and work ethic. "She always comes to practice with a positive attitude regardless of what other stresses are going on in her life," Bargender stated.
