The Education Foundation of Hudson has awarded Star Grants to support innovative classroom projects and curriculum training. A total of seven grants amounting to $20,342.63 were distributed among educators from the Hudson School District, St. Patrick School, and Trinity Academy.
The awards were presented by Foundation Board President John Kromer and other board members during a ceremony at Hudson High School on April 24. "The foundation and community are proud of the educators’ efforts to bring innovative ideas to the classrooms of local schools," Kromer stated.
Among the recipients was Leslie Bleskachek, a School-to-Work Coordinator at Hudson High School, who received $5,000 for the Video Production and HRPN News project. This grant will be used by the Technology and Engineering Education Department for equipment updates needed by the video production class.
Tom Klatt, also from Hudson High School, was awarded $4,255 for purchasing a new laser engraver in the STEM lab. Teachers Traci Wolfe, Jenna Weiland, and Kelsey Albarado secured $3,000 for attending a Core Knowledge National Conference aimed at enhancing elementary reading and spelling skills.
Anita Horne and Susan Erickson received two grants totaling $2,835.10 for tools and equipment supporting four-year-old kindergarten education in motor skills and visual support. Heather Fey from St. Patrick School was granted $2,964 for an Advanced Vowel Decoding program targeting intermediate reading skills.
Matthew Johnson from Trinity Academy received $2,288.58 for a Fifth Grade Classroom Organization Enhancement Project designed to improve student time management and organizational skills.
Funded by private donations primarily from local businesses and individuals, these Star Grants provide financial support for projects outside typical budgeting processes. Since its founding in 1990 as a private organization aiming to strengthen community participation in education, the foundation has funded over $2 million in local educational initiatives.
In addition to John Kromer, current board members include Lynn Krueger, Dr. Ron Bernth, Jodell Krause, Doug Stohlberg, Heidi Gilbert, Scott Snyder with Steven Keller serving as volunteer executive director.
