The University of Wisconsin recognized Jesse Yang and 11 other women for their contributions to equity and inclusion at an awards ceremony held on December 4 in Madison. This event marked the 29th anniversary of the Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award, which has honored over 400 women for their efforts.

UW President Jay Rothman stated, “The Universities of Wisconsin have a long-standing commitment to inclusion at our universities. We are proud to honor these women of color whose achievements are helping our campuses and communities.”

Yang expressed her gratitude for receiving the award, saying, “Colleagues see and recognize my work and the efforts I have contributed to the campus community that support students and the institution’s goals with equity, diversity and inclusion.” She further highlighted her passion for videography as a way to connect with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

As a first-generation college graduate from UW-Eau Claire, Yang considers it a privilege to serve at her alma mater. Her role as an IMC videographer involves capturing video content that showcases student stories and faculty projects. Her work extends beyond campus through programs facilitating global learning experiences abroad.

Yang has co-led immersion programs in Thailand and Hawaii aimed at enhancing students' understanding of diverse cultures. Additionally, she participated in research in France through UW-Eau Claire’s International Fellows Program, focusing on the Hmong diaspora's cultural transformations.

“There are a diverse range of experiential learning opportunities for students to take part in at UW-Eau Claire,” Yang remarked. She values being part of efforts that foster community and identity among students.

In addition to her videography work, Yang teaches courses in journalism and serves as a resource for BIPOC and first-generation students. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UW-Eau Claire and a master’s degree from West Virginia University.
