Melissa Meschke, a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumna, has found notable success in the field of economic development. Her journey began in 2017 when she returned to Wisconsin after spending five years in Michigan. Meschke took on the role of director at the Small Business Development Center at UW-Stevens Point, where she spent four years honing her skills.
“I completed two certificates from the International Economic Development Council, and I just knew this was going to be my future,” Meschke shared. “I get to touch so many things, from work with housing and childcare to workforce development and literally everything in between.”
In January 2024, Meschke became the executive director of the St. Croix Economic Development Corp. Her efforts were recognized when she received Momentum West’s 2023 Young Professional of the Year Award for her contributions to west-central Wisconsin's economic landscape.
Steve Jahn, executive director of Momentum West, acknowledged her impact: “Since taking over as the executive director of St. Croix EDC, Melissa has already become a very active, innovative partner in the economic development arena, not only in St. Croix County but the region as a whole.”
Reflecting on her achievements and career path since graduating from UWEC, Meschke stated that personal growth and professional experiences have been significant aspects of her journey. She credits her time at UW-Eau Claire for shaping her skills and character.
Meschke also discussed some challenges faced in economic development: "Economic development is one of those fields that requires vision and often patience to see all the ultimate outcomes come to life."
Looking back at influential relationships formed during college days, she highlighted Ray French as an important mentor who continues to guide her professional endeavors.
Meschke's advice for current students emphasizes networking: "Make time to meet all the people you can... Those single connections can bloom into so much more."
