A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Village of Fairchild in Wisconsin on November 7, 2024. The request, issued by us at Chippewa Valley Times, sought details about new voter registrations that occurred on November 5, 2024.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to such public records is essential for our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In the FOIA request, we asked for a list of new voters who registered to vote on November 5, 2024. We preferred this information in an electronic format for ease of access and analysis.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we also requested a fee waiver as part of our status as media professionals. This waiver would enable us to access these records without any financial barriers.
