A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Columbus, Wisconsin, seeking information about new voter registrations that occurred on November 5, 2024. The request was made by us at Chippewa Valley Times on November 7, 2024.
In our quest for transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we requested this data under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., preferably in an electronic format. The specific information sought is a list of voters who registered to vote on Election Day.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage, access to public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We await a response from the City Of Columbus and will continue our efforts to bring light to local governmental affairs.
