A recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Opal Lawrence, played a key role in helping Amplify Graphic Installations, an alumni-owned business based in Minnesota, relaunch with a new brand identity, according to an April 22 announcement.

The collaboration highlights the university’s approach to practical learning and industry partnerships. The project connected Lawrence, who graduated in December with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and interactive media, with Trevor James—a 2002 industrial and product design alumnus—seeking to expand his graphics installation company.

James said his education at UW-Stout provided him hands-on experience that shaped his career. “UW-Stout has a polytechnic, hands-on way of doing things, which I’ve always just loved,” he said. “When anybody says, ‘Hey can you do this?,’ I say, ‘I’ll be able to figure it out.’”

After starting his own business in 2013—originally called Artistinu—James sought help from UW-Stout’s Office of Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement for a full rebrand as Amplify Graphic Installations. Sarah Sippl from the office coordinated meetings between James and university staff including Associated Dean Aaron Durst and Assistant Professor Katie Lupton. Lupton recommended Lawrence for the job: “She’s going to get it done, she’s a great designer, she’s super reliable,” Lupton said. “This is going to be a home run.”

Lawrence was hired as a limited-term employee to refresh print materials such as business cards and brochures; redesign the website; update social media channels; and emphasize the company’s accreditation as a 3M Preferred Graphics Installer. Lawrence described her role: “They already had a logo, but they needed everything else to have that new identity.” She added that managing both creative work and communication made for “a very rounded experience – doing it all.”

James credited Lawrence’s professionalism throughout several months of work leading up to the relaunch: “It’s been very good, everybody’s been on the top of their game – very professional.” Lupton said working together was positive for all involved: “I feel like it’s been a positive experience and a great first example of projects for the future.” She also noted potential for more collaborations between businesses and UW-Stout.
