The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s tennis team lost to Hamline University 2-5 in a closely contested match on March 13 during their spring break trip in Orlando, Florida. Three of the singles matches were decided by tiebreakers.
This matchup is significant as it marks the start of the Blugolds’ spring break competition and highlights the competitive nature of collegiate athletics for UW-Eau Claire, which fields more than two dozen varsity sports teams for men and women according to the official website.
In doubles play, Reese Burton and Beatriz Felchak secured a win against Hamline’s top pair with a score of 6-3. The other two doubles teams, Delaney Hanson and Kiera Schmid, along with Marin Catencamp and Stella Platt, both lost their matches by scores of 3-6. In singles action, Burton won her match after a second-set tiebreaker while Aubrey Wittwer earned another point for the Blugolds by winning both sets 6-2, 6-3. Felchak fell in a second-set tiebreaker at number two singles. Ana Paula Ricaurte pushed her opponent to three sets but ultimately lost 5-7, 7-5, 7-10. Hanson was defeated in a second set tiebreaker at number five singles, and Morgan Briggman lost her match 3-6, 0-6.
The Blugolds are scheduled to continue their Florida trip with a match against Coe College on Monday, March 16 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
