The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team recorded two decisive victories on March 17 during the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Florida, defeating Hartford 8-0 and Webster University 18-1 at Blue Rawlings Field.
These wins mark a strong finish to the Blugolds’ Spring Break trip, highlighting their offensive and defensive strengths. The team’s performance is significant as it demonstrates their readiness for upcoming conference play and showcases the depth of talent on the roster.
In the first game against Hartford, UW-Eau Claire scored seven runs in the second inning, with key contributions from Claire Beck, Norah Kutnink, Breeley Gluch, Marlee Smith, Paige Lathrop, Ava Kozlovsky, Molly Marquardt, and Jane Wallace. Beck also pitched a complete game shutout over six innings with eight hits allowed and three strikeouts. Lathrop had two hits and two RBIs while Marquardt added two doubles and two RBIs. Smith collected two hits and two RBIs as well.
The second game saw an explosive start against Webster University with ten runs scored in the first inning. Marquardt led with three hits and four RBIs; Lathrop scored three runs with two hits; Beck contributed three hits and two RBIs; Kutnink drove in three runs despite not recording a hit. Pitchers Lauren Trottier, Lauren Heltemes, and Emma Sather combined to limit Webster to one run over five innings.
According to the official website, the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds serve both campus and community through statewide collegiate athletics. The program utilizes various facilities for its 25 intercollegiate teams and has enshrined 271 athletes, coaches, and administrators into its Hall of Fame since inception. The Blugolds operate under the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire athletics department and field more than two dozen varsity sports teams for men and women. Based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, they represent both university interests and engage with the surrounding community according to official sources.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will return home for a doubleheader against UW-Superior on March 24 at Sonnentag Fieldhouse in Eau Claire.
