The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds baseball team began its RussMatt Invitational campaign with a 14-9 victory over Keuka College on March 17, highlighted by a five-run eighth inning. The game took place in Davenport, Florida, and improved the Blugolds’ record to 3-2 for the season.
This result is significant as it demonstrates the team’s strong offensive capabilities and ability to perform under pressure. The win also sets a positive tone for the remainder of their tournament schedule.
The decisive moment came in the eighth inning when Austin Curti hit a two-run home run, followed by an RBI single from Austin Buck and a two-RBI double from Logan Hesselman. Earlier in the game, Cole Clausen contributed with a two-RBI double after Buck and Hesselman executed a double steal. Will Johnson added another run following a defensive error, while Diego Caicedo’s double increased the pressure on Keuka’s defense. Despite Keuka’s late push in the ninth inning, UW-Eau Claire maintained its lead through solid defense.
On the pitching side, Nicholas Meuser started for UW-Eau Claire, allowing three earned runs over three innings. Devin Nedland earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief work. Other pitchers contributing included Chase Watkins, Sebastian De la Toba, and Joey Ernster. Offensively, Buck recorded four hits and four stolen bases while scoring three times; Hesselman drove in five runs; Johnson had two hits and two RBIs; Curti hit a home run and tallied three RBIs.
