The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team lost to SUNY Purchase, 8–7, in a closely contested game on March 22. The Blugolds built a strong early lead but were overtaken by the Panthers after a late-game rally.
This matchup was significant as it highlighted both teams’ resilience and the unpredictable nature of collegiate baseball. The Blugolds led 7–0 through six innings before SUNY Purchase scored eight runs over the final three frames to secure the win.
SUNY Purchase took advantage of defensive errors and timely hitting in the eighth inning, including a ground-rule double by Michael Pagano and a single that brought in two more runs. Earlier, Diego Caicedo sparked UW-Eau Claire’s offense with a two-run double, followed by key singles from Austin Curti and Ian George during a five-run second inning. Caicedo added another RBI double in the eighth to narrow the deficit.
Nicholas Meuser pitched four scoreless innings for UW-Eau Claire, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. Sebastian De la Toba contributed with over two innings of relief, giving up one earned run. Joey Ernster and Chase Watkins faced challenges on the mound during SUNY Purchase’s comeback. Cooper Senne finished with nearly two scoreless innings.
Caicedo led all hitters with three doubles and three RBIs. George contributed two hits and scored twice, while Eli Keirstead added an RBI single and scored once himself.
