The University of Wisconsin-Stout announced on Apr. 21 that its fourth annual Unspooled Film & Animation Festival will take place on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, at Harvey Hall Theatre. The event will showcase capstone projects from seniors in animation, digital media, and video production alongside works by experienced filmmakers.

The festival highlights the practical learning approach of UW-Stout students as they present their final projects to the public. These screenings give emerging storytellers a platform while connecting them with industry professionals through workshops and panel discussions.

Among the featured works is “Badge of the Dead,” a six-minute animated short by Studio Juice. Team member Hannah Brown said she was inspired during an animation class: “I created this weird art in class of a hardened warrior-scout with a nail bat and a gas mask.” Fellow animator Jordan Grover added, “Every good idea starts with a piece of art.” Studio Juice received support from UW-Stout’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for their project management study. Kaleigh Kahl explained how larger teams benefit production: “Larger teams allow people to work at their best within their niche. It leaves room for specialization.”

Another film set to premiere is “You Must Destroy,” written and directed by Doran Acero. The film follows two U.S. Forest Service personnel who face unexpected consequences after failing to properly dispose of an old mascot costume. Acero said about his inspiration: “I was lucky enough to grow up in this environment, and I wanted to make a short film that captures some of its humor and magic.” He also shared his experience researching real-life protocols: “I don’t know. It seems extreme. It seems weird. It inspired me to make a short film.”

UW-Stout supports hands-on learning through modern labs, studios, industry-linked spaces according to the official website. The university is recognized as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University for blending theory with application according to the official website and functions as part of the University of Wisconsin System according to the official website. Students are prepared for careers through creative instruction and collaborations with businesses for internships and research opportunities according to the official website. Additionally, all full-time undergraduates receive laptops via its eStout program according to the official website.

The Unspooled festival is part of UW-Stout’s Spring Showcase lineup that includes other events such as fashion shows, research day celebrations, game expos, senior art shows, and mural painting initiatives.
