The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire announced on Mar. 23 that its recent First Destination Survey shows graduates are securing jobs quickly and earning higher salaries. According to Billy Felz, vice chancellor for enrollment management, “Once again, the First Destination Survey tells the remarkable story of how UW-Eau Claire sets up students for amazing futures.” Felz said that 82% of respondents received job offers before graduation or within a month after earning their degrees.

The survey results indicate why these findings matter to students and the region. The average full-time salary for undergraduates increased by nearly 10% from last year to $58,842. More graduates are also choosing to work in the Chippewa Valley area near campus—31% compared to 27% previously—which may be influenced by Eau Claire being named the top place to live in Wisconsin.

Felz said, “With the city of Eau Claire recently being named the No. 1 place to live in Wisconsin, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we see an increase of students deciding to stay and work in the region.” The Eau Claire Area School District remains a major employer with 35 new hires from UW-Eau Claire this cycle. Teri Piper Thompson, communications manager at the district, said, “We know that students who graduate from UW-Eau Claire will be highly qualified… Their enthusiasm for remaining in the Chippewa Valley and serving our students and families is so appreciated.”

Employers like Cintas Corporation have increased hiring from UW-Eau Claire as well. Brad Newton, service training director at Cintas and alumnus of UW-Eau Claire, said: “It’s a nice mix of students that understand what a blue-collar mentality looks like… Yet at the same time they can walk into a room of professionals and be comfortable.” Health organizations such as Aspirus Health also continue hiring graduates due to their preparedness; Natasha Wetterau said: “UW‑Eau Claire’s emphasis on hands‑on learning… produces graduates who are adaptable… engaged… eager to connect their classroom experience with real-world practice.”

Staci Heidtke, director of Career Services at UW-Eau Claire, attributed high job offer rates partly to internships leading directly into employment opportunities: “That means they’re applying for jobs… they’re taking action… It also tells me that a number of students are completing internships because they’re getting job offers from that internship.”

UW-Eau Claire supports student engagement through activities such as its prominent Blugold Marching Band recognized across Midwest events according to its official website. The university contributes broadly through collaborations impacting culture and economy according to its official website, features partnerships with health systems like Mayo Clinic Health System via shared facilities according to its official website, has received national recognition for quality and affordability according to its official website, advances health sciences initiatives with partners such as Marshfield Clinic according to its official website, and focuses on developing critical-thinking skills while preparing students for community contributions according to its official website.

The university’s report suggests continued strong outcomes for future classes seeking career success.
