Residents in St. Croix County are being urged to take precautions as winter weather is expected to move into the area tonight and continue into tomorrow. The St. Croix County Highway Department has issued a reminder for safe travel, noting that forecasts predict periods of snowfall starting this evening, which may lead to slick roads, drifting snow, and reduced visibility overnight and during the morning commute.

Highway crews will be working throughout the storm to plow and treat roads as conditions permit. However, officials warn that fluctuating temperatures and ongoing snowfall could make it difficult to keep roads clear, especially during busy travel times.

Robbie Krejci, St. Croix County Highway Commissioner, said: “We appreciate your patience as our crews work to keep the roadways as safe as possible. Your cooperation helps us do our job more effectively and ensures everyone gets home safely.”

The department recommends drivers reduce speed, allow extra time for travel, increase following distance due to longer stopping times on icy or snow-covered roads, give plow trucks space by staying back and not passing them on the right, and check weather and road conditions before leaving home.

For up-to-date information on weather and road conditions, residents can consult the National Weather Service at https://www.weather.gov/mpx/, WI 511 at https://511wi.gov/, MN 511 at https://511mn.org/, or visit the county’s website for winter safety tips at https://sccwi.gov/1034/16699/Winter-Weather-Awareness.

St. Croix County is home to several large schools such as Hudson High School with 1,718 students enrolled in the 2023-24 school year, Hudson Middle School with 1,150 students, and New Richmond High School with 1,086 students (https://dpi.wi.gov/). During this same period, white students made up about 88.5% of the student population in county schools (https://dpi.wi.gov/), while smaller ethnic groups together accounted for 11.5% (https://dpi.wi.gov/). Multiracial students represented approximately 3.7% of all students (https://dpi.wi.gov/).
