UW-Eau Claire’s men’s basketball team secured a decisive 89-55 win over Cornell College at Levick Arena in Waverly, Iowa, advancing to the championship game of the Buzz Levick Tournament hosted by Wartburg College.
The Blugolds relied on a balanced team effort, scoring 53 points from their bench and dominating inside with 44 points in the paint. Their rebounding advantage was significant, outpacing the Rams 46-26. UW-Eau Claire also hit 13 three-pointers and tallied 26 assists, helping them maintain control throughout the contest.
The game began with Andre Renta making a three-pointer assisted by Kenji Scales. Xavier Lewis contributed early with several baskets and rebounds. After Cornell College narrowed the score to 7-6, UW-Eau Claire responded with perimeter shooting from Joey Butz and Kenji Scales to extend their lead. The Blugolds led 41-26 at halftime.
In the second half, Tyler Haney scored multiple three-pointers, including one at the 9:55 mark that helped keep momentum for UW-Eau Claire. Kenji Scales added important layups and assists, while Luke Reder extended the lead further with a layup and free throw. The Blugolds outscored Cornell College 48-29 in the second half to secure their victory.
Joey Butz led all scorers for UW-Eau Claire with 15 points, hitting five of eight shots from beyond the arc and grabbing five rebounds. Xavier Lewis added ten points and eight rebounds on efficient shooting. Tyler Haney finished with eleven points and three assists, while Carter Lichtsinn contributed eight points and one steal.
With this win, UW-Eau Claire improves to a 3-0 record for the season; Cornell College falls to 0-2 overall.
UW-Eau Claire will play Concordia University (Wis.) in the tournament championship on Saturday, November 15 at Levick Arena in Wartburg, Iowa. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
